The
BritishInvasion
I took a break from watching these gay themed indie films and art films that Amanda Seyfried's Chloe film has curiously led me into. So instead I snatched this British film which is titled, An Education. The movie is a coming of age drama story, based on a memoir of the same name by British journalist Lynn Barber. Set in 1960's London, it is about a young aspiring teenage girl Jenny (Carey Mulligan) with a goal set on entering Oxford University but meets a charming con man, David (Peter Sarsgaard), who's about almost twice her age.I adored the movie because it is based on a true story and has been one of my fave films yet. I liked it so much because of the timeline, its got this different era -- I so love the old London setting and culture. And so with my fascination on London culture, I urge myself to watch several other British films that I could find:
Never Let Me Go (Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, and Keira Knightley)
Ginger and Rosa (Elle Fanning)
My Summer of Love (Emily Blunt)
Five Year Engagement (Jason Segel and Emily Blunt) *I only included this because Emily Blunt is British :) haha
Then I ran out of what to watch next and settled for this British TV drama series called, Lip Service (2010-2012). I was mind-blown with this show! After watching season 1 (which is a total of 5 episodes) I just want to stop watching 'cause I was cringing in most of the scenes, turns out there are only 10 episodes overall upto season 2. Pretty much there's only a few left for me to finish the entire thing, I tried but I really can't bear watching the whole thing and I just snuck myself into a halt on episode 6, thinking its too much for me to take, too hardcore for my taste and the story changes was like WTF! I pity myself listening to that IMDB list that this is as realistic as it seemed. Next!![]() |

Then I went to see this US TV show called South of Nowhere (2005-2008), its a teen drama that follows the lives of the Carlin Family, a simple religious family who just moved from Ohio to L.A., as they try to adjust to a new environment, a new school, racism, gangs, discrimination, drugs, alcohol, teen pregnancy, infidelity and sexual orientation etc etc. The show is cleverly written that tackles certain issues in a realistic sense. It doesn't spit at you right in the face but the fleshing out of all the characters were done well (except for Aiden's storyline in season 3) as you see it develop from season onwards -- that for some reason I find the show addicting. Its is really that addicting! The acting in the show weren't that consistent in some parts but the only driving factor of this show is the close relationship of Spencer/Ashley (which rises controversy when it was aired) and we should also include the Mom in some ways.

This show is worth watching even if it was cancelled a long time ago. This series has got some very thought out lines I've seen in a series in a long time. There are alot of memorable convos in this show. Did I mention the sarcastic banters were epic in this?!
Let's go back to the British scene shall we...
Since I don't know how to end this piece, lemme share this one part phone convo of SpAshley:
Spencer: Hey! Do you remember those 'Choose Your Own Adventure' books? You know, if you didn't like the way that one story is going....you can just go back and choose another story.
Ashley: So let's back up and choose another story.
Spencer: But life doesn't work that way, I mean, everything moves forward. Nothing moves backwards.
Ashley: Yeah, I guess.

There's more series to tackle next...just like what Spencer said, we can't go back, let's move forward... so let's marvel to the forth!
to be continued...
